Quick Links
4.9.1 What is the purpose of the job
sign-off process?
- The sign-off procedure allows you to raise concerns about potential
jobs you've been interviewed for. It also gives employers and/or Co-op Education
an opportunity to address those concerns where possible.
- It's a process you must initiate if you wish to withdraw your candidacy
for a job.
- The sign-off procedure is not a way for you to get rid of less
desirable job opportunities so you can have a better chance of being matched
with other more desirable job opportunities.
4.9.2 What reasons may I use to sign
off a job?
- There is no list of acceptable reasons to sign off a job. Please discuss
your request with a career advisor by dropping in to the Centre for Career Action (TC 1214). Be sure to bring your WatCard.
- The outcome of the discussion depends on the case. Not every sign-off
request is approved.
- If your sign-off request is approved, Co-op Education will inform the employer
of your reason(s) should they inquire.
4.9.3 Can I sign off a job anytime?
- You must have taken the interview with an employer before you can submit
a request to have it signed off.
- Don't wait! You must submit your job sign-off requests on the same
day as the interview and go to the Centre for Career Action to meet with a career advisor right away.
4.9.4 When may I not sign off a job?
Sign-off requests are normally denied if the information was available
to you with the job description prior to applying. For example, unacceptable
reasons for signing off a job are:
- job description - all information is clear and complete, but
you simply did not read the job description prior to applying.
- job duties - are slightly different from what was stated in the
job description. Employers advertise their jobs months in advance of your
start date. It is normal for some changes before your interview and/or
before you begin your employment
- salary - when the salary for the position is within the range
published in the Co-op Education Student Earnings information.
- vehicle requirements/driver's licence - the job description says
you need your own transportation (often just so you can get to the job),
or at least be licensed. In the case of a licence, you must be fully licensed
and not just beginning, or part of the way through, the full process.
- location - the location of the job is clearly stated in the job
description (it is best to get approval in advance from your parents or
significant others before applying to jobs).
- length of work term - the job is clearly 8-months long, or a
two-term commitment is stated as required.
