5.8 Some Tips
Take Action
Start
looking for a job on your own as well! Consider the
following action:
- Read the work search module of the Career Development eManual which deals with searching for your own job.
- Register with your local Human Resources Development Canada office for general employment opportunities.
- Talk to neighbours, friends, and relatives regarding possible employment within their firms. Ask them for suggestions
and/or contacts.
- Read the National Post, Globe and Mail, and local newspapers for job openings, expansion announcements,
and other business news for potential targets. Send a cover letter and a copy of your résumé
and follow up.
- Use the Yellow Pages. Zero in on the type of firm you are interested in working for and send a covering letter
and résumé. Follow-up with a phone call. Always ask for other referrals.
- Check out the Centre for Career Action web site at http://www.careeraction.uwaterloo.ca.
It contains a great deal of information and guidelines for people who are looking for employment. It also includes links to
job listings and other employment-related sites.
- Go to the Centre for Career Action web site page http://www.careeraction.uwaterloo.ca/jobs/SummerPartTime.asp and look up part-time. This is another source of
possible employment opportunities that might lead to a co-op credited
work term.
- Discuss any leads or suggestions you have with your student advisor.
