International Co-op At Waterloo
Every year nearly 1,400 Waterloo Co-op students challenge themselves to a work term outside Canada. Approximately 70% of Waterloo co-op students working outside Canada find their employment through the Waterloo Co-op Postings system, mostly in the USA. The other 30% of students working outside Canada find their own job opportunities. Most job opportunities that students find themselves are found by first working in Canada for an organization with overseas offices; by connecting with a global employer through previous work experience or extracurricular involvement, by going on an academic exchange, or by having a family connection overseas.
Generally the students working outside of Canada are those in high demand fields where there is a skills shortage. Some of these fields include Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Systems Design, Architecture, and Actuarial Science. The overseas opportunities posted byWatelroo are often located in the United States, however, a few are also located in Europe, Asia, and are generally for these high demand occupations.
According to recent graduate surveys, 1/2 of all of Waterloo's future graduates would consider working outside Canada for the right job opportunity.
If you were to ask any of the 1400 UW Global co-op students about their work terms, many of them would say that although the process can be difficult, time consuming, and require a lot of effort, their work term abroad was a memorable experience.
